WhatsApp keeps working on improving the privacy of the app. It also offers various ways of sending messages that contain sensitive information in a secure way. All messages are already end-to-end encrypted but it further lets users send disappearing messages that auto-delete after a while. It is now building upon the same approach by testing View Once functionality for texts.
View Once is a WhatsApp feature that already exists for photos and videos. It allows users to send a media file that can be viewed only once. It means once the recipient has viewed the photo/video, he cannot view it again. This is meant for sending sensitive files that you do not want the other party to keep with them. The only way they can do so is if they choose to take a screenshot or capture a photo using another device.
It is now expanding the same feature to the text message. It will allow users to send a text message that can be viewed only once and it will expire right away. The feature is currently in the under-development stage and is yet to become available to beta testers. It was spotted by WABetaInfo folks after the release of WhatsApp beta 126.96.36.199 on Android.
The shared screenshot shows Send button with a lock icon suggesting that a View Once message is being sent. Whenever it will be sent and the recipient reads it, they will not be able to view it again. This is everything we know about the feature and there is no information about the release plan either. We will keep you posted as more details will emerge.
