There are companies that are working on foldable displays and some are working on slidable displays but Samsung has showcased a prototype that can do both. At the ongoing CES 2023, Samsung Display demonstrated Flex Hybrid display panel that can fold as well as slide. It is not available commercially yet but is expected to arrive in future smartphones, tablets, and laptops.
Samsung's Flex Hybrid panel folds from the left side and slides from the right side. It has not mentioned display size and resolution when the panel is neither folded nor slid. It will be a 10.5-inch panel with a 4:3 aspect ratio when only folded but if it is slid as well, it measures 12.4-inch along with a 16:10 aspect ratio. The bigger size should deliver an immersive media consumption and gaming experience to users.
Samsung continued to showcase two more prototypes named Flex Slidable Solo and Flex Slidable Duet. The first panel can be expanded to increase the display size only from one side. As for the Duet, it supports expanding displays from both ends. The panel itself measures about 13- to 14-inches and can be expanded up to 17.3-inches. The larger display can be used for various purposes like multi-tasking, watching movies, and playing games.
All these hybrid and slidable display panels are only in the conceptual stage for now. Samsung has plans to release them commercially but a specific timeline has not been mentioned yet. It is safe to assume the company is not yet close to an official release and it will take some time before we can see these panels in commercially available devices.
