Nothing's first smartphone i.e. Nothing Phone 1 never arrived officially in the United States. It only received a limited release through a beta program and even then, there were a few catches like no proper 5G support. The company is set to change this with the successor Nothing Phone 2 which will launch later this year.
Carl Pei, CEO and founder of Nothing, shared the company's future plans in an exclusive interview with Inverse. The Nothing Phone 2 will be a "more premium" device as compared to the Phone 1. It is not just about better hardware but the team will focus heavily on software experience as well. He did not refer to the upcoming smartphone directly as a flagship. It means it is still unclear whether the phone will have a flagship or a mid-range chipset.
Nothing could not launch the first smartphone directly in the United States because of numbers and logistics. A smartphone launch in the country requires companies to get carrier certifications and integrate some of their features within the OS. The company now has enough resources to take care of those aspects which is why it is now ready for the second-gen smartphone launch. It has doubled its workforce to 400 as compared to what it was two years ago.
Pei further added when they launched earbuds, one-third of the sales came from the U.S. market. This is another reason Nothing does not want to lose out on the significant market share for smartphone sales. Pei had previously tweeted there are no plans to release Nothing Phone 2 anytime soon but he clarified he only meant to say the new phone will not be released in quick succession. An exact release timeline is still unknown but we can expect it to arrive in the second half of the year.
