Mark Gurman of Bloomberg has reported Apple Pay Later could launch as soon as March or April. The beta testing is underway for quite some time and is getting closer to a wider release. This is the same approach the company ahead of the Apple Card launch years ago.

When Apple introduced iOS 16 at WWDC 2022, it announced a new Apple Pay feature called Apple Pay Later. It does exactly what the name suggests which is to allow users to pay later through monthly installments. It is meant to give users flexibility that they do not have to make the full payment at the time of the purchase. It was expected to release in late 2022 but ended up getting delayed. The good news is we finally have fresh official details about the feature.
Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, has confirmed Apple Pay Later has entered the internal beta testing stage. It means the feature is currently getting tested internally by Apple employees. He did not reveal when we can expect to see it make a public appearance but considering internal testing has already begun, it should not take much longer now. Cook simply said it will launch "soon".
The exact details of the delayed release are unknown but reports suggest it has to do with "significant technical and engineering challenges in rolling out the service". It seems like the company has finally resolved those issues and is now getting ready for the release. There are speculations we may see the first public beta release of the feature with the iOS 16.4 release in Spring.
For those who may still be confused about Apple Pay Later, it is essentially a buy now, pay later feature. It will allow users to split a purchase into four equal payments over six weeks. Apple says it will not charge users any interest or additional fee for splitting the payment. It is said to be available everywhere you can already use Apple Pay. All users will be able to track their payment details like upcoming payments, total payments due, payment due in the next 30 days, etc. through the Apple Wallet app.
