Google has kicked off the journey for the next-gen Android version development. It has released Android 14 Developer Preview 1 (DP1) for eligible Pixel devices. It is meant to help developers prepare for the upcoming Android version but you do not need to be a developer to try out the new version.
It should be noted that even though Android 14 DP1 gives a glimpse of what changes are coming, these changes are primarily under the hood. The consumer-facing changes will make an appearance in future builds. Google says the new Android version improves developers' productivity and enhances performance, security, privacy, and user customization.
Android 13 and 12L laid the groundwork for supporting tablets and foldable devices with better optimization of resources for a bigger screen. The newest Android 14 is said to build upon the existing features and improve them. It will help developers create apps that can easily adapt to different screen sizes and form factors.
Android 14 developer preview 1 is available for the following models: Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6, Pixel 6a, Pixel 5, Pixel 5a 5G, and Pixel 4a 5G. Google's timeline suggests we can expect the first public beta to arrive in April followed by the Platform Stability release in June. We can then expect the stable build to arrive for everyone sometime in September.
