There is no doubt that iPhone contributes massively to Apple's revenues but with constantly increasing prices, it is not possible for everyone to upgrade to the newest model every year. This is why Apple was rumored to be working on an iPhone hardware subscription service that will allow users to split the cost over time. It was expected to get official in 2022 but has reportedly been pushed back.
Mark Gurman of Bloomberg has shared details in the latest edition of his weekly newsletter Power On. He claims the iPhone hardware subscription service release has been delayed due to engineering and technical setbacks. These have resulted in slow progress by the team and eventually a delay in the launch. The new release timeline is unknown but the report confirms there are no plans to scrap the service yet.
It should be noted the iPhone subscription service will be a different offering than monthly installment schemes. One of the biggest differences would be the pricing structure. Apple will not divide the iPhone price into 12 or 24 monthly payments. The exact pricing details are yet to be confirmed but a rumor suggested $35, $45, and $50 per month for iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max. Since the iPhone 14 series is already out and service is yet to go official, we can expect changes in the new pricing.
Another fintech project that Apple is working on for quite some time is Apple Pay Later. It is said to have entered the internal testing phase and a public release is expected soon. This will allow users to complete online purchases via Apple Pay as usual but instead of paying the amount right away, they can choose to pay it later. The payment can be divided into four equal payments that need to be made over a period of six weeks. The company will not charge anything extra for splitting the cost.
