Qualcomm debuts Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 processor

17 March 2023 6

Qualcomm has debuted Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 as the newest 7-series processor. It is aimed at mid-range smartphones with the first device expected to arrive next month. It is a direct upgrade over Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chipset that arrived last year. There is claimed to be a 50% performance boost and 13% better power efficiency.

The Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 is an octa-core processor with a peak clock speed of 2.91GHz. It is based on the 4nm manufacturing process including one Cortex X2 core, three performance cores, and four power-efficiency cores. There is an undisclosed Adreno GPU claimed to deliver the “biggest performance leap in 7-series history”. It also has Snapdragon Elite Gaming support for faster gaming performance.

The processor supports up to Quad HD+ display at 120Hz or 4K panel at 60Hz refresh rate. It is further compatible with 10-bit color depth, HDR10+, HDR10, and Dolby Vision among other technologies. There is a triple 18-bit Spectra ISP for improved camera performance. It has support for a 200-megapixel photo capture, up to 108-megapixel single camera, up to 64-megapixel and 36-megapixel dual cameras, and up to 32-megapixel triple cameras.

The new chipset obviously supports 5G connectivity which is through the Snapdragon X62 5G modem. Qualcomm has confirmed Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 processor will debut commercially next month. It will make its first appearance on Realme and Redmi smartphones followed by other brands.
