Android Pie vs Android Oreo: What's changed in a year?

Back in 2008, the first version of Android OS went public. Today the tech giant Google just announced the tenth-anniversary edition Android Pie. The Android Oreo was indeed one of the most brilliant additions to the Android ecosystem, however, now the latest Android Pie 9.0 is here.

After a long streak of rumors and beta versions, Google finally announced the final version of Android P and also the official name of Android P. Back at the I/O 2018 in May, Google announced the Android P key features will be "Digital Wellbeing”, new navigation with gestures support.

Soon after the official announcement, the Android Pie is currently being rolled out OTA for Essential and Pixel smartphones. The good thing is stock Android is as slick as its competitor iOS. As expected the latest Android Pie didn't bring a revamped system instead it is packed with a number of new goodies and tweaks.

For sure the most important aspect in everyone's mind is what kind of changes new Android Pie is bringing over the predecessor Android Oreo. Today we will highlight all the key changes of Android 9 so that you can know in detail the real differences. Starting with the Aesthetical changes new Android 9 is bringing on board.

Overall Aesthetics

Apart from the stock Android OS, there is plenty of custom UI based on Android in the market with tons of additions. Although the stock version is slick amongst all still sometimes it looks dated in front of colorful custom user interfaces.

The latest Android Pie brings a few colorful additions to make the overall system more attractive. Though these changes are not dramatically different still it brings colors to the system. The icons in the settings menu are not dull anymore as they are replaced with new colorful icons. The Quick settings bar plain icons are also replaced with blue circle icons.

The drop-down menu aesthetic is also changed now. You will find it much different and attractive than the plain white menu of Android Oreo. For sure many Android stock OS fans will find the new UI more attractive than the predecessor.

Digital Wellness

Dashboard

Undoubtedly the most important aspect in everyone's life is time. Google wants to help their Android OS users to keep a close eye on the most precious resource for everyone. One of the main aspects of the latest Android Pie is indeed Digital wellness.

With the Android P, Google introduces the Dashboard feature which keeps a close eye on your mobile usage. It keeps track of how much time you spend on apps, checking notifications, unlocking the device and much more. All these details are showcased in a pie graph.

For sure no one knows how much time they spend last day or week on Instagram, Facebook, Youtube and other apps. The Dashboard will help you better "Sanity checking" your time spent on the smartphone. The Android Oreo has a feature to check how much battery is being utilized by apps, however, the Dashboard is certainly the next step.

Some users might not like a digital check about how much time is they spent on social and other apps, but its certainly a good way to determine the time wasted in a day.

Usage limits (App timer)

With the Android Pie, Google not only helps you put a check on your digital usage but also it allows you to limit the usage as well. A new App timer feature is introduced which allows the users to set a specific time for certain apps and the time will reset at midnight.

For instance, if you reserve sixty minutes for Instagram, when the time is about to end you will receive a notification. once your time is complete the app will turn grey automatically so that you can't cross the limit.

The App timer is indeed a pretty good way to make sure you are not spending too much time of your day on a specific app. However, you need the willpower to implement a check on specific app usage.

Wind Down

Another key feature of the digital wellness of Android Pie is Wind down. The Android Oreo comes with Night Light mode which removes the blue light when the device is being used late at the night. The mode ensures less stress of blue color on the human eyes that's why when this mode kicks off the display become orange.

With the Android Pie, Google introduces Wind Down feature. All you need to set a "bedtime", the Wind Down will turn grey-scale and Do Not Disturb mode will kick on automatically. The good thing is Night mode is still here. This feature is once again targetted to avoid over usage of the smartphone when you are about to sleep.

Adaptive brightness


The Android Oreo features an adaptive brightness mode which adjusts the screen light automatically according to ambient light conditions. This feature was available for all Android-running smartphones. The Android Pie took the next step in Adaptive Brightness.

The device notes all the adjustments you make in certain conditions. For instance, you use full brightness in the early morning, moderate light during office timings and low-light when the battery is below 25%. The Android Pie running devices will auto bright display according to your requirements considering your daily routine.

Although it's not a groundbreaking feature certainly an addition to better enhance your UI experience. This feature wasn't available in Android Oreo.

Adaptive battery


A new adaptive battery mode is introduced with the Android Pie. It is important to mention that it isn't a battery saver replacement instead it enhances the battery life by making the power consumption more visible, you can easily determine how battery power is being consumed in the background.

With the Android Oreo, Google allows the user to check out which app is using more power when your device is idle. The adaptive battery will make sure you receive fewer notifications from apps which are not being used regularly. This will certainly result in better battery life and also the most frequently used apps won't be affected.

Volume control

Usually, when the user presses the volume rocker a certain menu pops up depending on the context. For instance, if you press the button in the app menu, it will show you notifications volume controls. On the home screen, all controls appear online.

In the Android Pie, the music control is set as a default. This means if you are planning to listen to music, you don't need to play at max and then adjust. Those who like to change notifications sound every time, they may disappoint with the change in default settings of volume controls.

App Actions

From last few years, Google is paying special attention to the AI. The company wants to bring AI in every field of life. Undoubtedly the Android Pie is smarter than its predecessor. With the Oreo, Google uses AI to predict which app user is going to open. With the latest Android Pie, Google took a step further by predicting what to want to do next. For instance, if you do exercise at 8 PM regularly and open the specific app before the workout, the device will open the app for you once you unlock the device at 8 PM.

If you are searching for a movie, the search could show you the direct link to purchase a ticket for a cinema close to you. Being smarter, it will bring everything in front of you what you are planning to do next. The search actions not available in apps menu but also it will assist you in Google Assistant and web search bar as well.

Native support for Notches

The iPhone X notch design was so successful that many Android OEMs followed the trend this year by releasing at least one smartphone with a notch. Google keeps a close eye on the matter and introduces native support for notch cutout with the Android Pie. Thanks to native support, now developers can build apps with better support for cutout/notches. This feature wasn't available in Android Oreo.

Google Lens

Last year Google introduced Google Lens as an exclusive feature for Pixel smartphones. Google integrated this feature in the Android Pie. Now all Android smartphones running on Android 9 will have Google Lens feature so they can recognize historical buildings, translating words in different languages by simply activating the Google Lens.

A new multi-camera API is introduced for smartphones with dual cameras. This will allow apps to direct utilize dual cameras.

Improved Copy and paste

The Android P brings an improvement to Copy and Paste. When you long press on the specific part of the article, the specific part will get highlighted so that you can easily copy it. The new feature will certainly enhance the accuracy of copying text directly. The new features aren't quite different from iOS copy and paste. With the Android Oreo, Google introduced Smart Text Selection but it wasn't as accurate in selecting a specific part of an article as the latest Android P.

Improved Navigation

All the latest Android running smartphones have on-screen navigation buttons. The soft keys are back button, recent apps, and the drawer button. The latest Android Pie brings a different option for navigation with a single pill shaped home button.

On single swipe up the device will showcase recent apps, however, on double swipe the device will open Apps drawer. The new navigation is certainly more attractive and speedy with more gestures support. Another good thing is that home button doesn't stick always instead it will appear only when it is possible to go back. You can switch off the new navigation system with the traditional on-screen soft keys.

Recent apps menu


The recent apps menu is also revamped. The Android Oreo brings 3D cards stacked on top of each other. With the Android Pie, Google revamped the UI of recent apps. Now the recent apps include flat cards instead of 3D and also placed side-by-side. On first look, you may find it quite close to the iOS app switching menu.

Indeed it is one of the first visual change which you notice when you switch from Android Oreo to Android Pie. The new apps menu is pretty much in line with other visual and navigational changes in Android Pie. Last but not the least it is important to mention that Digital Wellbeing features aren't ready yet. Google confirms these features will arrive later this year, most likely the Pixel 3 lineup smartphones will be the first to receive these features.
