Microsoft is quietly removing features from Windows Media Player on Windows 7

28 January 2019 4

Windows 7 is going to retire soon i.e. January 14, 2020, and Microsoft has already started taking away features from the aging operating system already. This can be seen as an attempt to push nearly 700 million Windows 7 users to adopt Windows 10.

As per the latest move, Microsoft is switching off the ability to download metadata from its services using Windows Media Player and Windows Media Center. Metadata is basically the information like the title, genre, and artist for songs, and the director, actors, cover art which can be downloaded from Microsoft’s server.

As per the technical support document updated by Microsoft “After looking at customer feedback and usage data, Microsoft decided to discontinue this service. This means that new metadata won’t be updated on media players that are installed on your Windows device. However, any information that’s already been downloaded will still be available. Going forward, you may be unable to view information (metadata) such as the title, genre, and artist for songs, and the director, actors, cover art, and TV guide for movies in Windows Media Center and Windows Media Player.”

This change is not only going to affect Windows 7, which has entered the last 12 months of support, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 will also have the metadata support withdrawn. While Windows 7 has been one of the most popular operating systems, however, with depleting support it may be the right time for the users to make a switch.
