Xiaomi releases software update for Mi 9 series to hide display notch

04 March 2019 3

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi recently launched its 5G powered flagship device in the shape of Xiaomi Mi 9 which got sold out in 53 seconds while the second wave of the stock also got sold out swiftly soon after. The phone featured a display notch much like what we’ve seen on iPhone X. Now in the latest software update rolled out to the phone, the company has implemented a feature to hide the notch through software.

This means that the notch area gets black and the overall display is moved down a bit in the MIUI 10 9.3.1. In addition to this, the update offers improved power consumption of Google services, this would be improving upon the battery consumption.

The phone offers 3,300 mAh battery with a 20W wireless fast charge which is applaudable. The technology offers faster charging then the wired 18W charging in Xiaomi Mi 8. This could be appreciated by seeing how Xiaomi Mi 9 charges to full (100%) in 90 minutes while Huawei Mate 20 Pro takes 124 minutes whereas iPhone XS Max takes 257 minutes for full 100 percent charge.

Would you prefer hiding the notch through software and compromise on the display real-estate or would couple up with the notch design? Let us know in the comment section below.

When you mentioned it's the designed that gets moved down and the notch area becomes black, only then was it easier to understand how the notch is hidden. Cool!

The notch is there, so it can be hidden with some kind of software update, right? Now, is it possible to have things vice versa? Showing a notch for those phones that don't have one already
