Google Pixel phones and Essential Phone get May 2019 security patches

07 May 2019 2

Google has released the May 2019 Android security patches for its Pixel phones, which include Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, Pixel 2XL, Pixel 3, and Pixel 3 XL. Note that the Pixel C is no longer receiving major OS updates, so its monthly update is still Android 8.1 Oreo. The May security patch includes no functional updates for the Pixel 3 and the Pixel 3 XL this month.

The Essential Phone has also received this Android security update on the same day. As per Essential’s tweet, May system update brings improvements to Bluetooth and shutdown responsiveness as some experienced it.

The OTA files and the factory images for the Pixel phones are available. There are 10 issues resolved in the May security patch dated 2019-05-01 and 20 for 2019-05-05. The most severe of these issues is a critical security vulnerability in Media framework that could enable a remote attacker possibly executing arbitrary code through a crafted file.

Google notes that “no critical security vulnerabilities affecting the Android platform were publicly disclosed without a security update or mitigation available for Android devices.”

The May security patch has come just ahead of the Google I/O 2019 where the company will release the next Android Q Beta.

This is what I actually love about Essential. No matter what their user base is, they are almost always ahead to dish out security patches. Good work!
