Unlocked Galaxy S9/S9 Plus to receive F.M radio support update

31 March 2018 4

While many may be of the opinion that the F.M radio is outdated and replaced by more modern means like audio streaming services, and even a massive music library on one’s phone, one cannot deny the importance of F.M radio. As traditional and old-fashioned as it may sound, it still offers free services and is often the platform for budding musicians and singers to make a local appearance, giving them their golden ticket to fame. Well, F.M radio is a feature in a smartphone which you would like to have than rather not have.

Since many manufacturers don’t even pay attention to it, many smartphones become crippled and unable to properly handle F.M tuner apps. Thankfully, Samsung won’t have to deal with this as the company had confirmed a while back that it would continue to leave FM hardware unlocked and accessible for its smartphones in U.S and Canada. Both Samsung and LG have partnered with NextRadio to ensure that their smartphones get the best. Well, as of now it seems like those are the two countries mentioned and you just might be out of luck if you’re living in another country.

While this should be the case, not everything is fine and dandy with the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus as some users have complained that the unlocked Galaxy S9 models aren’t properly playing the F.M radio. This is probably some incompatibility with regards to different carrier variants of the Galaxy S9 smartphones as NextRadio only lists carrier variant GS9 smartphones as supported by its app.

According to sources, here’s NextRadio’s explanation for it:

Samsung mistakenly did not add the NAB FM API to the unlocked devices. Our team confirmed this with them a couple of days after release upon receiving reports the app did not work. Samsung has said it will be in the first update they do, but have not yet settled on a date.

The model numbers are SM-G960UI and SM-G965UI that do not currently work for FM. SM-G960U and SM-G965U are sold through carriers and do work for FM.

That’s good news and it appears that Samsung Galaxy S9 owners won’t have to wait too long to get things fixed!
