Elon Musk promises $1 rides in LA tunnel

18 May 2018 3

Elon Musk’s Boring company which is planning to build tunnels in LA for its hyperspeed loop transit system stated at the Leo Baeck Temple in Los Angeles on Thursday that his company plans to ferry people from the city’s downtown area to the airport in eight minutes, for just $1 per person.

The tunnel will be 2.7 miles from north to south and will run parallel to the Interstate 405 freeway. The tunnel will allow for running transit pods that can seat 16 passengers and move at 240 kmph (150 mph). Elon Musk was in LA to present his company’s new underground electric transportation system. He didn’t specify how soon the loop hyper speed system would be operational.

The Boring company has entered into a partnership with LA Metro to build a tunnel network in the city and ease the traffic problems. Musk noted, “If you can build a tunnel in LA, you can build it anywhere.” He spoke about the Boring’s company plans of bringing its underground solution to traffic woes to other major cities across the US. However, a number of US cities are sceptical of the plans as the development costs for the tunnels are very high and could cost as much as $1 billion per mile.

"Super huge thanks to everyone that helped with this project," Musk said on Instagram. "Strong support from public, elected officials & regulators is critical to success."
