Samsung is said to be working on its next-generation smartwatch. This smartwatch has been codenamed Galileo and is being developed in the United States. If leaks are to be believed the Gear S4 smartwatch will run on Android Wear OS rather than Samsung’s own Tizen OS.
While Samsung has been very active in wearables segment thanks to its Gear smartwatch and Gear Fit fitness bands, all of their wearable devices ran on Tizen OS apart from the original Galaxy Gear and Gear Live that came in 2014.
A popular tipster, Ice Universe, has mentioned in his post on Weibo, “Samsung and Google are going to release an Android Wear flagship watch in the second half of this year. Gear S4 to be renamed Galaxy Watch”. Ice Universe has had a very credible record of accurate leaks in the industry. However, he did not clarify, if this a one-off arrangement or all the future wearables from Samsung will run Wear OS.
He has further added that the Gear S4 will come with a new name Galaxy Watch. This is in line with previous reports that Samsung has filed for a trademark for the names “Galaxy Wear” and “Galaxy Fit”.It is about time that the Gear Watch 3 gets a replacement and we can expect the Galaxy Watch around the second half of 2018.
Chipmaker Qualcomm Senior Director of Wearables Pankaj Kedia has also has stated that Google and several other vendors are working to release Gear OS devices with their new chipsets. He has hinted that there could be a flagship smartwatch. This flagship could be Galaxy Watch where both Google and Samsung are working together.
While these are just early reports about Galaxy Watch, we are waiting for more and concrete updates on this, till then let us keep our fingers crossed and enjoy the news with a grain of salt.
