Xiaomi has just launched its latest flagship Mi 8 in an event in Shenzhen China. It comes with one of the best hardware specifications available in the industry at the moment. Mi 8 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC coupled with 6GB RAM and three storage variants of 64GB/128GB/256GB. The phone comes with a 12MP dual camera setup where the primary sensor comes with a f/1.8-aperture lens and the secondary sensor is a telephoto lens with f/2.4 aperture. The camera setup phase detection autofocus, 4-axis optical image stabilization (OIS) on the wide-angle module, and an LED flash. On the front, there is a 20-megapixel shooter with AI capabilities for selfies.
Since Mi 8 is one of the most awaited phone this year, DxOMark did an in-depth camera review. The Mi 8 scored a handsome overall score of 99 and DxOMark rates Mi 8 as one of the best cameras that have been tested there. However, it is worth noticing that these scores are not out of 100. DxOMark explains that the "overall photo score is calculated from sub-scores in tests that examine different aspects of its performance under different lighting conditions."
Extended dynamic range and accurate exposure helped Mi 8 in getting an impressive 105 in still photography. As per DxOMark “The Mi 8 has fast and accurate autofocus, and produces a pleasing bokeh with smooth blur transitions and a regular shape to highlights.”
The phone scored a decent 88 on video recording thanks mainly to its fast and accurate autofocus, wide dynamic range and good color rendering.
As per the rating agency, while the score of 105 is really good for still photography on a smartphone camera, there is a scope of improvements like missing very fine structure details and fringing around edges. Bokeh, despite being very accurate, was reported slightly artificial in some cases.
DxOMark rates Mi 8 as a good performer for low light photography and delivers accurate exposures in challenging conditions. The agency found that the noise level in the photos is very well controlled however at times due to this software controlled noise correction, finer details are lost. Since the camera module is almost same as the Mi Mix 2S, the results were found to be similar to the Mi MIX 2S.
DxOMark rates that overall the Mi 8 is a steady performer and it delivers in most tricky situations. It claims that the telephoto lens is accurate and usable. As per DxOMark Mi 8 was found to be an overall attractive package with good value for money.
