Just a few days back, Huawei announced the Android 9 Pie based EMUI 9. The latest OS will be soon available for all the users after the beta testing is over. Currently, the users of Huawei P20, P20 Pro, Mate 10, Mate 10 Pro, Honor 10, Honor View 10 and Honor Play will be able to apply to take this early version of EMUI 9 for a spin.
However, after the EMUI 9 announcement, Huawei’s President of Consumer Business Software Engineering, Dr. Wang Chenglu in an interaction with media announced that Huawei is not working on its own mobile operating system, at least for now. Though there have been rumors that the Chinese company is working on its own Android alternate.
As per Dr. Wenglu, Technology to develop a new OS is not a challenge. He mentioned that the non-technical stuff like developing a balanced ecosystem of applications compatible with the OS and partnerships is a major roadblock.
This is one of the major reason why OS like Android and iOS are doing really great. Their application ecosystem is very strong and keeps growing bigger than ever. Though Samsung also has its own Tizen OS ready, it still is not powering any major device apart from wearables. Then there is a need for partners willing to create both paid and free applications for the new ecosystem.
The other reason why Huawei is not considering its own OS is that Dr. Wenglu feels Huawei’s partnership with Google is going very strong at the moment. He feels that there is no need to create an alternative to Android till the time Google keeps Android open.
While the reasons given by Dr. Chenglu sound valid, Huawei’s relation with the US government has not been at its best. Along with ZTE, Huawei was also under US lawmaker’s radar and even lost a chance to offer its devices in contract with At&T. Also, in the recent past we have seen few leaked devices running on Kirin OS. So we can’t be really sure if Huawei isn’t ready with a backup plan if relationships with Google go south.
