iPhone XS A12 chip benchmark result reveal 4GB RAM and incremental update

14 September 2018 3

Apple during the recently concluded launch event announced its latest 7nm based A12 Bionic chip which comes with better GPU and Neural Engine powering its new iPhones. The company claimed that the processor is the “smartest and most powerful chip ever”.

Apple claimed that the A12 Bionic chip is 50% faster than the previous generation A11 Bionic Chip and contains 6-core Neural engine that can handle 5 trillion operations per second. While Apple did reveal a lot of numbers in terms of overall improvements. It did not share much about the core specifications of the chip.

Now Geekbench has compared the new A12 Bionic chip against the last years A11 Bionic processor. The initial scores highlight that the A12 processor focuses heavily on the single core performance instead of multicore performance.

In terms of multi-core, the performance of the new chip is at par or at a lower in some tests against the outgoing chip. The Geekbench comparison is between the iPhone 8 Plus and a newer iPhone labeled as 11,6. However, we are not really sure as to which device is this. It can be either the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max or even the cheaper iPhone Xr.

The Geekbench results reveal that A12 SoC is very slightly beefed up with 6-core 2.49GHz vs the 2.39GHz on the A11 processor. It also shows that the new A12 Bionic processor comes with 4GB RAM along with an almost four times boost in L1 cache from 32KB to 128KB. Overall the comparison shows that the A12 Processor is just an incremental update over its predecessor.

Also keep in mind that the scores show that the devices are running on an iOS 12.1 which as of now is not available to any beta tester, developer or any consumer. So it could also be a chance that these results are fake and take them with a grain of salt.
