According to the changelog, the OTA update brings in Project Treble support. To the uninitiated ones, the Project Treble was introduced as part of the Android 8.0 Oreo and its aim is to make updates faster and easier for OEMs to roll out to devices. Here, in the case of the OnePlus 5/5T phones, it states that OnePlus will be free to update its software without having to wait for the chip maker like Qualcomm to also update its code.
Before the arrival of Project Treble, not only does the Android OS has to be updated, but so does the low-level hardware code as well, which is maintained by the chip maker. So, according to this project, OnePlus will follow even faster updates for its two smartphones. However, contrary to this, OnePlus community expert said last year in an AMA session that the company doesn’t plan to roll out the Project Treble to the OnePlus 5/5T.
Coming back to the OxygenOS 5.1.6, other support that comes to the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T is IDEA India VoLTE, also the update improves the Bluetooth stability for the phone calls.
This OTA update is a staged rollout and will be received by a limited number of users today and will have a broader rollout in a few days.
