Skype audio and video calling on Alexa devices goes live

20 November 2018 1

Microsoft and Amazon have joined hands to offer rich calling experience on Alexa powered smart home devices. This integration is a result of Amazon and Microsoft joining forces last year. Starting today, Amazon Echo Dot, Echo, and Echo Dot Plus will be able to make voice calls while Echo Dot Show and Echo Dot Spot can make Video calls via Skype.

While Alexa’s built-in app offers free calling, Skype is chargeable and Microsoft has offered free 100 minutes of both Video and Audio calls a month for two months after linking your account. Like Alexa’s pre-built option, Skype also offers calls to a total 34 countries including the US, UK, India, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.

To set up Skype on Alexa all you need to do is open Alexa app, go to menu, settings and then communication. Then click on “Add a Skype account” and just sign in with your existing Skype account. To place a call just say “Alexa, Skype Mom; Alexa, call Dad on Skype; Alexa, pick up.

Amazon Alexa is not only growing in number of devices sold, but also in the better services it's offering along with other apps. Skype happens to be the latest of them.
