NVIDIA brought the GeForce RTX series of graphics cards for gaming desktop PCs back in September last year but it wasn't announced for the gaming laptops. Well, now at the CES 2019 event, the company has finally made this announcement that now these powerful GPUs are also available to the gaming laptops. The series includes the RTX 2070, RTX 2080, and RTX 2080 Ti as well and the latter two are coming to more than 40 laptops. According to NVIDIA, these new laptops will be able to run ray-traced games like Battlefield V at 60fps.
What is a ray-tracing rendering technique?
NVIDIA claims the ray-tracing tech helps in producing the most life-like simulations possible in games as it’s well-suited for offering realistic, real-time lighting and effects. This rendering technique uses the new graphics architecture known as Turing which is said to be the biggest jump in graphics since Cuda arrived in 2006. The ray-tracing rendering technique models light in much more detail as it intersects with surfaces, materials, and moving objects. Game developers could produce realistic reflections, refraction, and scattering effects in real time. Compared to the current graphics tech – rasterization, ray tracing can even detect and render mirrors, refract glass, and can even determine the color of light as it passes through the objects.
NVIDIA tells The Verge, one can expect 20% more performance from an NVIDIA RTX 2080Mx-Q compared to the GeForce GTX 1080 Max-Q, as well as 40% more efficiency. It also claims, “Max-Q models with GeForce RTX 2070 deliver up to 20 percent higher performance than the popular GTX 1070 on traditional games."
NVIDIA has also announced that each new RTX-equipped laptop will include NVIDIA’s G-Sync tech to allow the screen to vary its refresh rate to match the render rate of the GPU.
The first laptops with RTX GPUs will arrive on January 29th, from laptop makers like Acer, Dell, Asus, Gigabyte, HP, MSI, Razer, Lenovo, and Samsung. The company has bundled up both Battlefield V and Anthem with the purchases of an RTX 2080 laptops or just one of either of the titles for RTX 2070 or RTX 2060 laptops.
