Nokia explains Android update process with infographic

11 January 2019 2

It’s always a great task to roll out the latest and greatest version of Android to smartphones. Nokia works day and night in order to keep its smartphones up-to-date. In order for its users to get an idea of the cumbersome procedure that the manufacturer has to go through before the software updated can be rolled out, the company has created an interesting infographic which is quite self-explanatory.

The journey to develop a new software begins with the chipset vendors. This is necessary as the chipset vendors are the ones responsible for developing the required drivers. Once this is done, the Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) is sent to the various smartphone manufacturers who build the OS according to the devices they manufacture. One may think that it’s the manufacturer who decides which SoC should receive the update. However, in reality, it is the chipset vendor who has this privilege. The next process isn’t too time-consuming when it comes to Nokia smartphones as they run pure Android One. This process consists of the company doing its internal testing. After this, a beta version of the software is released to the Nokia worldwide community.

The usual norm is that the software makes a quick stop for conformance standards tests like Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Oftentimes, it’s the quality checks and additional operator tests which hold up the entire process. It is only after this that a stable and final build of the software is globally released through an OTA update.

  • As a Nokia user, all that I understand is the Android 9 Pie is there on my device. All that's mentioned in the graphics is everything that takes place behind the scene.

      • We always hear of beta tesing for new major updates, or beta testing for even minor updates, etc. but it's now that I know there are even more steps before the beta testing actually begins.
