Huawei Mate 20 Pro and P20 Pro receive Netflix HDR and Widevine L1 support

16 January 2019 2

Huawei Mate 20 Pro and the P20 Pro can now stream the Netflix in HDR, thanks to the Widevine L1 support which is now available to both the devices. Both these phones have HDR display and had the support for HDR since launch but the users still weren’t able to stream in the same quality and not even in HD due to the lack of Widevine L1 support. They only had Widevine L3 support which is the lowest level of certification and it allowed users to watch videos from Netflix at a maximum of 540p, not the 720p or 1080p.

The Widevine L1 is an encryption scheme lack of which makes you unable to play the HD or higher-quality videos on your handsets. Thus, a device is unable to playback content from streaming services like Amazon and Netflix in full resolution.

Now since the support is made available to the Huawei Mate 20 Pro and P20 Pro, you’ll be able to watch the Netflix in HD and even HDR. If you own either of these devices, you would be able to see the HDR badge on titles like 13 Reasons Why and Marvel’s Daredevil.

It should be noted that the users will need to have a ‘Premium’ subscription in order to see Ultra HD 4K or HDR content.
