Google has announced that its News Initiative is now partnering with Automattic and Wordpress for a low-cost publishing system. The name of this new system is Newspack and according to Google, it’s fast as well as secure. The idea is to work towards the goal of local news sustainability and help small newsroom overcome challenges that they find while going digital.
Google via its blog announced that journalists need not to worry about designing websites, configuring CMSs or building commerce systems as this will be handled by the new publishing tool – Newspack. This way, the writers will continue to focus on what matters the most and cover their communities. Google exemplifies the troubles that the reporters face while starting their own digital publications, these could be anything from technical to business problems.
Google News Initiative has invested $1.2 million in its efforts to create “Newspack” together with the two web development companies. Google says the system has been tailor-made to the needs of small newsrooms. According to Google, Newspack isn’t trying to be all things to all publishers.
It is trying to help small publishers succeed by building best practices into the product while removing distractions that may divert scarce resources. We like to call it an opinionated CMS -- it knows the right thing to do, even when you don't.
Google also says that Automattic will be partnering with Spirited Media and News Revenue Hub to better understand the features and capabilities that contribute to publisher success.
Google will also advise the users on the Newspack feature set so that they don’t get any difficulty while running their publication. It will also offer technical support on the integration of Google products.
Newspack will begin development in the coming weeks and will be made available to publishers globally later in the year.
