Google Pixel 3 and Galaxy Note 9 are the highest DxOMark Selfie scorers

23 January 2019 2

DxOMark, website that has been providing image quality ratings for mobile devices has now introduced the scoring for front-facing smartphone cameras as well. Smartphones with quality selfie cameras are growing and thus these must be put to tests like the rear camera phones to know their worth. So DxOMark Seflie test protocol has been introduced which is based on the same procedures and methodologies as DxOMark Mobile, but a few modifications have been made to reflect the way front cameras are used.

The new protocol has been launched with test reports for 12 smartphones ranging from entry-level devices to flagship models. These include the highest DxOMark Mobile camera rating scorers the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, Huawei P20 Pro among others like the Xiaomi Mi MIX 3, Apple iPhone XS Max, and more. But only the Google Pixel 3 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 have managed to take the lead in DxOMark Selfie rating by scoring 92 on the new scale.

DxOMark explains while the Google Pixel 3 leads in focus system, the Note 9 achieves better results for exposure and color. Images captured with the Google device show slightly stronger contrast and a cooler white balance. Samsung Note 9 applies a little less contrast to faces, making for a slightly natural look.

While the two have the same DxOMark Selfie overall score, it’s the Pixel 3 that picks up the lead when it comes to the Photo score. The Galaxy Note 9 scores 96 and the Pixel 3 scores 99 on the Photo score and the website states a secondary super-wide-angle camera at the front of the latter is giving it an edge over the former. However, in DxOMark Selfie Video score, Galaxy Note 9 takes the lead, and in fact, the Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 comes in between and secures a second position and Pixel 3 goes on the third.

According to DxOMark, during the video test, some occasional light white balance and exposure instabilities under changing light conditions can be seen when moving the camera in Pixel 3. Furthermore, the device also doesn’t have an HDR mode in the video shooting, so some clipping in high-contrast scenes are visible. On the other hand, the Galaxy Note 9’s key strengths lie in the video as well. DxOMark noticed good exposure on faces in most situations along with good color rendering with accurate skin tones and well-preserved details with low levels of noise.
