Samsung Gear VR to work with Galaxy S10 series | UPD: Requires an adapter with S10e

08 March 2019 1

Update : March 8th, 2019

It has been found that the Galaxy S10e won’t work with the Gear VR so you have to use a new adapter to make it work. Galaxy S10e users who try to connect their handset to the Gear VR (SM-R325) would find that the device doesn’t fit properly. This is because the adapter has to be replaced before the Galaxy S10e can be used with the headset. So, Samsung will provide free adapters for the users who buy Galaxy S10e.

Samsung has unveiled its latest phone line-up, the Galaxy S10, S10+, S10e, and S10 5G at the Unpacked event in San Francisco. The company has confirmed that all variants of the S10 series are compatible with the latest Gear VR headset.

The Samsung Gear VR is a snap-in smartphone headset was released in 2014, however, Samsung is continuing to support the product line with its flagship devices released each year. The latest version of the headset (SM-R324NZAAXAR), offers support for 14 different Samsung smartphone models apart from the four newly released members of the Galaxy S10 family.

The Gear VR runs Oculus’ mobile platform software and has a similar content library as Oculus’ own Go headset.

Samsung has announced the Galaxy S10 line-up with what the company calls a “dynamic AMOLED display” which displays high dynamic range content in the HDR10+ format, and offers a greater range of brightness levels for richer, more realistic looking immersive content.

The latest Galaxy S10, S10+ and S10 5G phones come with WQHD+ resolution (3,040 × 1,440). The S10e is the most compact and affordable variant in the line-up and has a 2,280 × 1,080 display resolution. The Gear VR was originally designed for phones with a 16:9 aspect ratio. The S10 series will effectively use the same 1,280 × 1,440 per-eye resolution as older Galaxy phones when used in Gear VR.

Pre-orders for the Samsung Galaxy S10, S10+, and S10e start from February 21st, and Samsung is offering Galaxy Buds headphones as a pre-order bonus with the S10 and S10+.
