It looks like the physical button to invoke Google Assistant is coming to more devices than we thought. It was first seen on LG G7 last year and this year we’ve already seen it on devices like Nokia 3.2 and Nokia 4.2, LG G8 ThinQ, LG K40, Xiaomi’s Mi 9 and Mix 3 5G, Vivo V15 Pro and TCL phones.
With these partnerships, Google expects to have over 100 million phones with a dedicated Google Assistant button and will allow Google to build more features around it. The Google Assistant is traditionally found under the home button, however, a physical button offers a faster availability.
As of now, the physical button has three different actions enabled in it. A single press on the button will wake up the virtual assistant while a double press will give you a visual snapshot of the day while a long press of the button will keep the assistant listening to the commands until you let it go.
This looks like a bid from Google to push in more users towards its ecosystem. The more users get used to the Google Assistant, higher is the chance of them preferring Google’s other smart devices like speakers etc. over rivals like Amazon Alexa. We can also assume that the upcoming Google devices may also have the same button to invoke the digital virtual button.
