Xiaomi and Light have announced a partnership at the MWC 2019 event in Barcelona, just a couple of days after Sony and Light did the same. Light is a market leader in advanced computational imaging and has also helped HMD Global develop the Nokia 9 PureView camera setup.
Xiaomi and Light will reportedly “jointly develop and market new imaging solutions for smartphones” according to reports. Like Sony and Light, these two companies will develop multi-image sensor solutions for smartphones, which is Light’s speciality. The company has already launched some interesting products and with partnerships with Sony and Xiaomi, we could see very innovative products soon. Smartphone makers Sony and Xiaomi’s products will see an edge when it comes to smartphone photography with the partnership.
As of now, there is no information when the first Xiaomi-branded phone with camera solutions co-developed by the two companies will be launched or whether Light’s branding will be present on Xiaomi devices. It could be a similar deal like between, Huawei & Leica so we may see Xiaomi-branded devices with Light’s branding on the rear cameras.
“We are thrilled to partner with Light to leverage their advanced imaging solutions for our future devices,” said Zhu Dan, VP, GM of smartphone camera department, Xiaomi. “Xiaomi works tirelessly to remain at the forefront of smartphone innovation, and perfecting smartphone photography is a key focus for us. We are excited to work on devices using Light’s technology so our users can produce even more amazing photos.”
