Google's Project Mainline aims to apply updates without the need of a reboot

08 May 2019 4

Google at this year’s I/O made several announcements and one of them was about introducing the new features of the Android Q. We are yet to know when Google decides to release the final version of Android Q but the latest beta announced at the event has arrived with several notable features, including the Live Caption, Focus Mode, and more, so as to bring an ease to your smartphone usage. Well, there’s one more aspect that will not only be appreciated by the users but also by the OEMs.

Google announced the Project Mainline that lets your phone get the latest security and privacy updates faster. The Project Mainline will offer privacy enhancements as soon as they’re available, without having to reboot your phone.

Google announced at I/O that with Android Q, it’ll update important OS components in the background, similar to the way it updates apps. This means after installing the update via OTA or manually, you will not be required to reboot your device. And hence you’re just getting rid of this extra step that was required to be taken so as to apply the updates on the system. Now, this will happen directly via Play Store, just like the way, you update your installed apps.

According to The Verge, there will be 12 modules that Google can update individually, in the beginning. These include things like media components. This means small patches and fixes for any kind of bugs will not require a reboot of your device as Google is capable of installing them right from the Play Store.

The main idea behind Project Mainline is to cut down the wait time that the users have to go through before.

Applying the updates without rebooting your mobile phone won't be more time saving than this update. Rebooting after installing an update is definitely more time consuming at times irritating too!
