Google Podcasts now available in search results

10 May 2019 2

Google is now rolling out the new podcast -focused search results in desktop browsers. The features were announced earlier this week at Google I/O 2019. Users searching for a podcast will now see the three most recent episodes which can be played directly in Google’s web player on podcasts.google.com. The feature works across both desktop and mobile apps. It is especially useful on iOS where a dedicated Google Podcasts app is yet to be released.

The web player was spotted in March this year and has a similar set of playback controls to the dedicated Google Podcasts app which was launched on Android last year. The players allow users to skip forward and backward, control playback speed, and even sync your playback across multiple devices. However, one of the biggest limitations is that the interface only lets you browse episodes from a single podcast, and you won’t be able to browse different podcasts from the site. Zack Reneau-Wedeen, Google Podcasts' head of product, has tweeted a demonstration of the new functionality.

Apple Inc had also updated the web interface for Podcasts to allow it to play episodes directly earlier this year. The company is reportedly planning on breaking up iTunes into separate Music, TV, and Podcast apps.
