Google Assistant will soon be able to trigger routines

17 May 2019 1

Google has announced that it is retiring the ‘Works With Nest program’ and is migrating a few features over to the Google Assistant, which includes the ability to automatically trigger routines based on whether or not you are home. Google Assistant users will be able to configure these directly and these will work with smart plugs and lights. However, Google has not confirmed when the functionality will be released for the assistant but stated that it is expected to roll out later in 2019.

During the Google I/O conference the company had stated that it was bringing the Nest and Home brands under one roof as “Google Nest.” It had also announced the shutdown of the “Works with Nest” program. Now, Google has stated that the shutdown won't affect the current integrations with Nest accounts. the internet giant has stated that it is transitioning Nest to use user’s Google accounts, however, it won’t forcibly upgrade users to that.

Google further stated that Work for Nest program will be replaced by the Works with Google Assistant program which supports over 30,000 devices. It has also integrated with Assistant Routine, which will allow the device to trigger routines based on when they have left the home or come back.

Google stated in a blog post, “One of the most popular WWN (Works with Nest) features is to automatically trigger routines based on Home/Away status. Later this year, we’ll bring that same functionality to the Google Assistant and provide more device options for you to choose from. For example, you’ll be able to have your smart light bulbs automatically turn off when you leave your home. Routines can be created from the Google Home or Assistant apps and can be created using the hardware you already own. Plus we’re making lots of improvements to setup and managing Routines to make them even easier to use”.

Like there is a set of actions to be performed through Google Assistant, how about the routines? Had read about Google Home not reciting each step it carries out. Is it the program with routines?
