The Samsung Galaxy Fold set a trend in the smartphone market. This trend for foldable devices has now been taken up by many manufacturers. It’s well known that Apple has been wanting to manufacturer a foldable smartphone of its own. A concept foldable iPad made its way online, revealing how the device could work. A prior patent had also been filed by Apple regarding a foldable smartphone. It seems like Apple’s new patent for a foldable smartphone has been granted.
The patent reveals a foldable display, one which folds inwards and resembles that of the Galaxy Fold. The patent reveals the device having a display as well as a protective cover layer. These are designed to bend along the intended foldable regions. Supposedly, the protective layer will be made up of a ceramic material. This will either be glass, sapphire or zirconia. The above figure clearly shows how the device folds inwards. A quick look at FIG. 4A brings in an element of surprise as one is left with more questions than answers.
Rumour has it that the first foldable Apple iPhone may make an appearance in 2020. However, this is just a tentative date and is based on speculation. Speaking of patents, Apple was granted another one which showcases a Smart Keyboard Folio. The image is quite revealing, showing a trackpad, keyboard and support for Apple Pencil.
