Apple announced iOS 13 with a myriad of new features and while some of them got a mention on the stage of WWDC 2019, some just didn’t get any utterance. But, iOS 13 preview webpage holds every feature of it, in case you want to know everything about the new version of the operating system.
With iOS 13, Apple is bringing optimized battery charging so as to combat battery aging. Apple has very briefly explained the work of this process and mind you! This isn’t a small feature. It saves your iPhone’s battery by not fully charging it. Lithium-ion batteries which iPhone uses have the capability to offer longer usable life even if you don’t charge above 80%. And, this battery optimization tool by Apple has been designed to smartly hold charge levels below a designated threshold, thus preventing premature battery aging. The aim is to improve iPhone battery health and longevity. With the new optimization, Apple will basically prevent your iPhone from charging above 80% until you need it.
In many cases, if you leave your device on charge the whole night, it will hit 100% and after this threshold, it drops to 98 or 95% then charges back up to 100% and repeats this cycle. So, in this case, maximum charge cycles are getting used without even actively using the phone.
So, Apple has come out with a way that will charge your iPhone to only 80% so that your device doesn't lose maximum charge cycles and hence live longer. This new algorithm will analyze your usage stats, for instance, when you wake up and start your day, and so learning from your daily charging routine, it can wait to finish charging past 80% until you need to use it. Take, for example, your iPhone might wait until a certain amount of time before you wake up to finish charging from 80% to 100%. As Apple mentions, Optimized battery charging “helps slow the rate of battery aging by reducing the time your iPhone spends fully charged. iPhone learns from your daily charging routine so it can wait to finish charging past 80% until you need to use it.”
To access this option, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health and toggle the “Optimized Battery Charging” feature.
