Amazon’s video game division, Game Studios has reportedly cut out many positions by laying off dozens of employees and this happened on the last day of E3, one of the biggest video game conferences in the world. According to a report by Kotaku citing an Amazon spokesperson, the reorganizing is happening so that employees could put their focus on the development of New World, Crucible, and some new unannounced projects as well.
The spokesperson further said,
“These moves are the result of regular business planning cycles where we align resources to match evolving, long-range priorities. We’re working closely with all employees affected by these changes to assist them in finding new roles within Amazon. Amazon is deeply committed to games and continues to invest heavily in Amazon Game Studios, Twitch, Twitch Prime, AWS, our retail businesses, and other areas within Amazon.”
Amazon also canceled some unannounced games, that person told Kotaku.
Amazon Games Studios division is currently developing the online games Crucible and New World, reportedly told affected employees. They are only provided 60 days to look for the new positions within Amazon and if they fail to do so within the allotted period, they’ll have to leave the company with a severance package.
Crucible is a 12-player, a class-based game in which the players form alliances to become the last man standing and the New World is a big multiplayer sandbox game in which players fight each other or with the monsters out in the world. These games have no set release date but looking at the seriousness of the AGS towards the company, the launch shouldn’t be too far.
The reorganization at Amazon Game Studios indicates that the company is very much serious about this and wants to put more of its focus on the current projects so as to not repeat the past incidents. Previously, it had to cancel many game titles as the things or plans didn’t go well. It first canceled the Breakaway, its first game back in 2018. Later, some prestigious executives, like Far Cry 2 director Clint Hocking also left the company before shipping any games. So, it becomes indispensable and even alarming for the company to focus on some unannounced projects.
