Nest Mini with upgraded Assistant, Wifi with integrated smart speakers launched

15 October 2019 0

Google brought a bunch of new hardware at its Made by Google event apart from the primal Pixel 4 series. While there are some worthy upgrades over the existing products, there’s a new member in the family called the Pixel Buds truly wireless earbuds with hands-free Google Assistant. Among some hardware upgrades, we have the iteration of the Google Home Mini which has been launched with a new name – Nest Mini and some new features here and there.

The new Nest Mini is exactly similar to Google’s first tiny speaker Google Home Mini in terms of looks but it gains some new features that may interest you. It has the same iconic design as the original Mini with soft rounded edges. And it now also welcomes a new color in the family which is Sky. And, the Nest Mini now also includes wall mounting facility so that you can take it in your kitchen and mount it somewhere far from your cooking top and food splashes. Google also emphasizes that the fabric covering the Nest Mini is now made from 100 percent recycled plastic bottles. A single half-liter plastic bottle makes enough fabric to cover more than two Nest Mini devices.

In terms of feature, it’s about the bass which Google claims is twice as strong as the original Google Home Mini. The new-gen Mini speaker gets the machine learning-assisted audio tuning to auto-tune the sound. There are small lights added to the left and right of the Nest Mini to let you know where the controls are when you’re listening to music.

One of the biggest upgrades done to Nest Mini by Google is the improved machine learning model which according to the company removes the need for an extra round trip. Thus the model will learn better over time and respond quickly. Google claims Nest Mini is smarter and faster than the original Mini. It has an embedded dedicated machine learning chip with up to one TeraOPS of processing power. Google says this chip has made it possible to move some Assistant experiences from its data centers directly onto the device. Google specifically mentions that in the US this feature processes commands locally with the much faster response time.

The Google Nest Mini will be available at the same price of $49 as Home Mini. You can pre-order today from Google Store and it will hit the shelves on October 22 at Best Buy, Target, Walmart and other retailers.

Nest Wifi

Google has also launched the Nest Wifi that now comes with integrated smart speakers. The Nest Wifi system is actually two separate devices – Nest Wifi router and the Wifi point. While the former plugs directly into your modem for a strong home network and the latter expands your coverage where you need the most.

Nest Wifi has a beautiful design with soft, rounded edges and it’s more than the usual Wifi devices. Nest Wifi points come in three colors, Snow, Sand, and Mist; the Router will come in White.

Google claims the Nest Wifi is more powerful than Google Wifi as it’s capable of delivering up to 2 times the speed and up to 25 percent better coverage. Google says the system is scalable and it can offer coverage for a 3,800 square foot home.

The Nest Wifi comes with Google Assistant for a hands-free experience. Google has incorporated the same speaker as Nest Mini so your Wifi can now do double duty by being even more productive. Apart from just the usual commands, you can also command the Nest Wifi to pause the Wifi for a certain family member, the best use case would be with the kids, of course. You can also ask things like “Hey Google, what’s my internet speed?”

The two-pack costs $269, and there’s a three-pack for $349, with preorders today and devices available on November 4th in the US. It will come to other countries in Q4.
