MediaTek, the Taiwanese chipmaker is reportedly developing new 5G-enabled SoCs which will empower the mid-range smartphones. Going by the report from MyDrivers, MediaTek will launch its two5G-enabled chipsets by mid-2020.
But, first, the company will announce its first-ever SoC with a 5G integrated chip, possibly the Helio M70 5G modem in Q1 2020. This SoC is based on 7nm FinFET and it will be used by Oppo and Huawei.
By mid-2020, MediaTek will come up with the second chipset with an integrated 5G modem specifically designed for the mid-range smartphones. Reportedly, the name of the SoC is MT6873 which will also be built on the 7nm process but with a 25 percent reduction in chip size. This will minimize the cost of manufacturing and it may be used by Chinese companies for mid-range phones. The mass production of the MT6873 will start in Q2 2020 with a commercial release on devices by Q3 2020. Also, the report further says that MediaTek will ship 40-50 million units of these two 5G SoCs next year.
Qualcomm will also bring its SoCs specifically designed for mid-range smartphones in 2020. So, we will see another face-off as 5G heats up the competition to another level.
Recently, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun confirmed that the company is planning to launch more than10 5G devices next year. Since Xiaomi launches products at aggressive price points, it’s fair to assume that one of the customers of MediaTek’s upcoming 5G chipset is going to be Xiaomi.
Also, Realme has confirmed that it will launch the world’s first smartphone equipped with Qualcomm’s 5G integrated chip. But we have lesser names to guess when it comes to MediaTek. But expect to see some smartphone from Oppo and Vivo using this chipset.
Gone are the days when MediaTek used to sit behind, today it gives head to head competition to its closest rival Qualcomm with some apt offerings. The take up of 5G is rising and we will see some applications making use of it next year. Stay tuned for the next big battle!
