Xiaomi Patents Clamshell Foldable Smartphone

15 November 2019 0

It seems like 2019 will propel into the new year a new trend, that of foldable smartphones. Motorola has had a hand in the pie and revived its Motorola Razr as a foldable smartphone. Well, Samsung has been looking into doing the very same as it has its W20 5G clamshell foldable smartphone geared for launch on November 19th. In addition to this, a patent put forward by Samsung regarding foldable smartphones was also approved. Speaking of patents, a set of them have been spotted online and this time filed by Xiaomi.

The designs have surfaced from the CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Administration). These images reveal the potential plans which Xiaomi has in mind. This includes a foldable clamshell-like smartphone. Did you know that while this only just surfaced, they were submitted last year? What’s interesting about the design in this patent is that it is unique and unlike that of the Motorola Razr. The device in its closed state is a small rectangular display which opens from its square-like shape into a rather tall aspect ratio smartphone. Present on the interior is an upper bezel and front-facing camera.

It must be noted that this is just a patent which may never translate into something concrete and see the light of day. However, it does indicate the company’s interest in the technology and helps give users an idea of the direction which the company is headed in. Earlier this year, Xiaomi did express its desire to build a foldable smartphone. Do you think the company will go through with it? Let us know in the comments section below!
