Larry Page and Sergey Brin, who founded Google over two decades ago are now stepping down from the executive roles at Google’s parent company, Alphabet. In a formal letter posted on Google’s blog, Page and Brin have announced that Alphabet and Google do not need two CEOs and a President, so, going forward, Sundar Pichai will be the CEO of both the companies.
Page and Brin have announced that the two companies are now well-established and it is time to simplify the management structure. The two personalities will continue to be part of the companies as Board members, shareholders, and co-founders.
While it has been a tremendous privilege to be deeply involved in the day-to-day management of the company for so long, we believe it’s time to assume the role of proud parents—offering advice and love, but not daily nagging!
Note that Pichai has been running Google as CEO already and is responsible for the enormous growth of the company in search and advertising business. This growth has helped the parent company, Alphabet to reach new heights and become one of the most valuable companies in the world. Pichai was elected the CEO of Google in 2015 after previously being appointed Product Chief by Page.
In a reply to the letter penned by Page and Brin, Pichai said that transition won’t affect the Alphabet structure or the work they do day to day. He will continue to work with them and take guidance and insights like he always does.
From now onwards, Pichai will be the executive responsible and accountable for leading Google, and managing Alphabet’s investment in the portfolio of “Other Bets,” the collection that focuses on many divisions, including an experimental X lab, internet group Access, LTE balloon initiative Loon, drone delivery project Wing, and self-driving car unit Waymo, among other groups.
Alphabet was founded back in 2015 and created through a corporate restructuring of Google. Many companies and divisions that were formerly a part of Google became subsidiaries of Alphabet, but Google remains the umbrella company for Alphabet’s internet-related businesses. Some of the direct components of Google are the Android mobile operating system, YouTube, and Google Search. Alphabet was established with an aim to make Google the core business of internet services that could be cleaner and more accountable and also allowing greater autonomy to group companies that operate in businesses other than internet services.
Pichai is one of the great leaders in the technology sector who took early successes and made some of the inventions for which they will be known for eternity. We hope Pichai’s insights will help Alphabet and its subsidiaries to take the same lead as Google.
