OnePlus phones get Google Assistant-powered Ambient mode for "proactive" experience

11 February 2020 0

A new feature for the Google Assistant called Ambient Mode got announced at the IFA trade show last year. This is addressed as the “proactive” Google Assistant and the function of this mode is to offer you the Google Assistant experience whenever you put your phone on the charge.

Google announced back in November that the Google Assistant-powered Ambient Mode will soon be rolled out to the devices running Android 8.0. And, it is now only coming to OnePlus devices, starting from OnePlus 3 and above.

The Google Assistant-powered Ambient Mode offers information and suggestions on weather, entertainment, news, reminders, and more. When your phone is being charged, the feature turns the phone into an informational display to let you access basic information that you normally get by invoking the Google Assistant. The only difference is this Ambient Mode converts the phone into a smart display until the time it is being charged.

The mode pulls up an interface that you can interact with by giving a few commands. You can control home devices, play music, read the news, and much more. And just like the basic digital photo frames, the Ambient Mode offers a slideshow of your favorite pictures on the screen.

Google in an introductory video says that the Google Assistant-powered Ambient Mode is "fundamentally about moving from an app-based way of doing things to an intent-based."

So, to opt-in this feature, simply connect your OnePlus device to the charger and click the notification that appears on the phone and follow the guidance to finish the setup process. Alternatively, you can enable this feature in Google App Settings > Assistant > Phone.
