Elon Musk ‘The Boring Company’ which had been in talks with LA to build its traffic skipping tunnels has started cutting its first tunnel. The company is using its 'Godot' tunneling machine and has already "completed the first segment of the tunnel in LA", revealed Musk.
The company had tested the Godot tunneling machine at the SpaceX headquarters in California. Musk had spoken about the tunnel with the Los Angeles Mayor, Eric Garcetti, and stated that its tunnel network would severely decrease the traffic problems in the city.
No longer waiting for Godot. It has begun boring and just completed the first segment of tunnel in LA.— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) June 28, 2017
Musk plans to build an entire subterranean network underneath the streets of Los Angeles. However, it's unclear where this first tunnel portion was cut and how far it went. Musk had stated earlier that it was easy to build the tunnels but difficult to get permits for digging under the city.
The Boring Company's plans to use electric sleds to haul vehicles at speeds up to 125 miles per hour, according to a concept video released in April by Musk. This will shorten half-hour drives aboveground to just five-minutes in the underground tunnels. The first tunnel network plans to connect Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Culver City, Santa Monica, Westwood and up to Sherman Oaks.
The project is still in its infant stages, and if successful The Boring Company tunnels will soon be found in Los Angeles and other cities.
