Elon Musk fears AI may spark World War 3

06 September 2017 4

Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has expressed his concerns regarding the race to develop artificial intelligence. Musk stated that AI could one day trigger World War 3.

Musk’s comments came after Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that the country which controls artificial intelligence could one day come to rule the world.

In response to Putin’s statement, Musk took to Twitter and wrote: “China, Russia — soon all countries with strong computer science. Competition for AI superiority at national level most likely cause of WW3.”

Musk stated recently stated that AI may initiate world war 3 by itself, “[WW3] Maybe initiated not by the country leaders, but one of the AI’s, if it decides that a pre-emptive strike is a most probable path to victory,” Musk added.

Last month Musk, took more than 100 robotics and AI leaders to the UN to take action against lethal autonomous weapons.

“Once developed, lethal autonomous weapons will permit armed conflict to be fought on a scale greater than ever, and at timescales faster than humans can comprehend,” the letter read. “These can be weapons of terror, weapons that despots and terrorists use against innocent populations, and weapons hacked to behave in undesirable ways. We do not have long to act. Once this Pandora’s box is opened, it will be hard to close.”

Apart from Musk, Microsoft’s co-founder Bill Gates and renowned physicist Stephen Hawking have also warned of the threats posed by AI. However, Google’s Larry Page believes AI could help mankind. Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg has also criticised Musk’s skepticism about AI as “pretty irresponsible”. “With AI especially, I'm really optimistic,” Zuckerberg had said.
