Xiaomi has officially introduced a new smart TV named Mi TV Lux Transparent Edition. As the name suggests, this is a TV that boasts a transparent OLED display panel. It is claimed to be the world's first mass-produced transparent TV that can be purchased starting August 16th. The only caveat is that it is currently limited to China.
The Mi TV Lux Transparent Edition sports a 55-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) OLED display which is transparent. It means when the TV is off, you will be able to see through it whatever it is behind the TV. It essentially acts as a window to the back and when it is turned on, the images appear to be floating as you are still able to see what's going on behind. Other tech specs of the panel include 10-bit support, 120Hz refresh rate, MEMC motion compensation, a static contrast ratio of 150,000:1, 1ms response time, and 93% DCI-P3 wide color gamut support.
Under the hood, the TV is powered by the MediaTek 9650 processor with AI Master Smart Engine. It is an advanced image processing technology with 20+ optimization algorithms. It is said to smartly optimize the display as per the content that is being played to offer a premium visual experience. There is 3GB of RAM with 32GB of onboard storage along with dual 8W speakers. It also has Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital Plus, and DTS-HD support for audiophiles.
The TV has a thick and circular base that houses all the hardware components. It helps keep the TV very slim (5.7mm) and also acts a stand for placing it on a surface like a table. The connectivity options include Bluetooth 5.0, WiFi, two USB ports, three HDMI ports, an Ethernet port, and an AV port. It runs MIUI's tweaked version meant for televisions out of the box and also has a native app store for installing apps and games.
Xiaomi has priced the Mi TV Lux Transparent Edition at CNY 49,999 which is about $7,200. The TV is already available for preorders in China with sales beginning August 16th. The company has not said anything about the global release of the TV yet.
