MediaTek has announced a new chipset named MT9638 aimed at 4K smart TVs. It is specifically meant for affordable smart TVs with the goal of bringing premium features to them. It is a multi-core chip packed with various features including the ones powered by artificial intelligence (AI).
The MediaTek MT9638 features four Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 1.5GHz. It has an ARM Mali-G52 MC1 GPU and an integrated APU i.e. AI processing unit. The latter is claiming to deliver up to 10X faster processing in comparison to the external AI chip options. It supports AV1, HEVC, and VP9 4K content along with MEMC, different HDR standards, Dolby Atmos, and DTS Virtual X surround sound technologies.
In terms of AI technologies, the new chipset supports AI-Super Resolution (AI-SR), AI-Picture Quality (AI-PQ), and AI-Audio Quality (AI-AQ). Each of these techs is said to be helpful in improving the video and audio quality of the content that gets played on the smart TV. It would work for all sorts of content including live TV, disc-based media, and live streams.
MediaTek says the new MT9638 processor is also compatible with voice assistants. It will up to the TV brands to integrate their respective assistants with the chipset. There is a dedicated sub-processor to make use of the four, far-field microphones so that users are able to trigger and interact with the assistant as fast as possible. The company expects smart TVs powered by this new processor to hit the market by the second quarter of the year.
Alex Chen, GM of the TV business unit at MediaTek said,
“As smart home appliances become more intelligent and diversified, smart TVs are becoming the new hub for the smart home as consumers take advantage of AI-enabled multimedia features to control all their devices right from their TV. The new MT9638 continues our legacy as the No. 1 chip provider of smart TVs, bringing consumers incredible AI, multimedia, gaming and entertainment experiences in theater-quality 4K.”
