Google has started development and beta testing of the next major Android version i.e. Android 13. We have heard reports of what new features could be coming to devices later this year. It is time for a new report that talks about the Android 13 version meant for smart TVs, likely to be called Android TV 13.
The report says Google is working on an Android TV 13 feature called low power standby. It is said to block network access and place restrictions on apps when the device is in standby mode. These restrictions will be lifted during the doze maintenance mode but it will be a temporary thing. In other words, these will get applied again once the maintenance mode is off.
The wakelocks will also be disabled during the standby mode. This makes sense as users do not look for app notifications on their TVs. The overall benefit of this new feature is to improve the efficiency of smart TVs. It will also help users in bandwidth reduction but to know to what extent, we will have to wait for that.
Android 13 TV is further reported to have expanded picture-in-picture (PiP) mode. It should be noted that Android TV received PiP mode support years ago. The new change will simply help developers "create PiP windows that are even longer or wider than before." It is said to be implemented in a way that both windows will be fully visible to the user.
