Withings has unveiled a new smartwatch named ScanWatch that is claimed to be capable of detecting sleep apnea. It is a potentially serious sleeping disorder that other fitness wearable makers are also working on detecting through their products. The smartwatch is also capable of taking ECG readings. It is the first smartwatch to offer both these functionalities.
The Withings ScanWatch is said to have been developed in collaboration with cardiologists and sleep experts. It comes with a SpO2 sensor that emits and absorbs a light passing through blood vessels. It helps it detect oxygen levels in the blood which are said to get depleted during situations like sleep apnea. If it notices such behavior where the oxygen level is not enough, it will alert the user of the same.
The smartwatch is further capable of monitoring sleep quality and sleeping patterns. The companion Health Mate app will show all the data and reports in detail along with Sleep Score so that users can get a better idea. One interesting feature is Smart Wake-up where the watch will wake up at the optimal time of their sleep cycle using vibration alarms.
As far as ECG readings are concerned, the ScanWatch comes with a heart-rate sensor. It constantly monitors the heart-rate of the user and alerts in case of any kind of irregularity or abnormality. The watch will recommend users to take an ECG reading during such instances which is as simple as touching bezels on both sides at the same time.
Withings says that the ScanWatch features a sapphire watch face and a waterproof, 316L stainless steel case. It sports a PMOLED display where users can easily check vital stats about their workouts and daily goals. It can also be used for seeing app notifications from the smartphone. While the official companion app is Health Mate, the smartwatch is compatible with over 100 third-party fitness apps including Apple Health, Google Fit, Strava, and MyFitnessPal.
The Withings ScanWatch has been priced at USD 249/EUR 249/GBP 229 for the 32mm variant and at USD 299/EUR 299/GBP 279 for the 42mm variant. It is expected to go on sale starting Q2 2020 but since it is yet to get FDA and CE approval, the actual release may get delayed.
