Xiaomi has officially launched Mi Band 5 fitness tracker in China. It is the latest release from the company in its health and lifestyle segment and is part of the annual refresh cycle. This is a direct upgrade over last year's Mi Band 4 and brings a number of noteworthy changes and new features.
The Mi Band 5 sports a 1.2-inch OLED colorful display which offers a 20% bigger viewing area than the predecessor. It should help users get more data without having to scroll up or down. There are more than 100 new watch faces for those who prefer personalizing their fitness trackers quite regularly. Some of them are inspired by popular animated characters like SpongeBob SquarePants, Hatsune Miku, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Case Closed.
Under the hood, it has a new processor that should deliver faster and smoother performance. Xiaomi is also claiming more accurate fitness tracking through 11 different fitness tracking modes. For female users, the team has also added the ability to track menstrual cycles directly from the fitness band. It will further offer more detailed sleep tracking insights and also offer a Personal Activity Intelligence (PAI) score.
The second major Mi Band 5 change is the addition of a magnetic charging dock. It eliminates the need for taking the fitness tracker out of the strap for charging purposes. It is one aspect that used to be an annoying user experience for some Mi Band users but going forward, it will not be an issue. The new buyers will be able to place the whole band on the dock. Unfortunately, the new charging dock does not work with older generation bands.
Xiaomi has released the Mi Band 5 in two variants, one with NFC and one without NFC support. The two variants are priced at CNY 189 (about $27) and CNY 229 (about $32) respectively. Both variants will go on sale in China starting June 18th.
