Spotify app on Apple Watch can now directly stream music without the need of the connected iPhone. As reported by Germany’s Macerkopf first, several Apple Watch users have found the new ability popping up on their screens when they tried accessing the Spotify app.
Spotify first tested the support for direct audio streaming on Apple Watch back in September with only a small group of users. Those who tested the feature were able to stream Spotify over the Apple Watch via Wi-Fi or cellular without the iPhone.
And, now it seems the feature is ready to be rolled out to everyone, though it currently is more like a server-side update. Several users have reported that they have received a message asking if they would like to stream Spotify on their Apple Watch.
Spotify launched its app for Apple Watch two years back and since then it has been receiving many new features and capabilities. But the ability to allow users to stream directly from the watch only was missing. Currently, the Spotify app on the Apple Watch is used as a remote control for the connected iPhone to do music streaming.
Those who are seeing the new capability on their Apple Watch can now access their own library of playlists, podcasts, artists, and albums via cellular network or WiFi. Users can stream music directly and listen to it using connected Bluetooth headphones or speakers. Currently, there is no search function available but you can take the help of Siri and search for music using voice command. Just ask Siri to play a certain album, title, or genre on Spotify.
