Samsung unveils Galaxy SmartTag, SmartTag Plus to help you find lost items

15 January 2021 0

Samsung's Galaxy Unpacked 2021 event is primarily about the new Galaxy S21 5G series of smartphones and Galaxy Buds Pro truly wireless earphones. But it also announced one more product named Galaxy SmartTag. It is a Bluetooth-powered location-tracker device similar to the Tile products and is meant to help users find their lost items.

The Galaxy SmartTag is powered by Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and looks like a small tile. It can be tied to any item that you are afraid of losing like keys, your phone, car in the parking lot, and your luggage. Samsung is even promoting the usage scenario of tagging to your pet's collar so that if they end up losing their way to the house, you can easily find them.

The tracker tool pairs with the Samsung SmartThings application through a Bluetooth connection. The app is what will let you manage different aspects of the tool. It will show you the last known location of the item you are looking for. When you will start searching, there will be a bar that will start to get filled with Green color the closer you will get to the tracked proximate location.

There is also a button on the tracking interface that can be tapped to make the tag play a chime. It will further help you locate it faster and conveniently. However, it is important to note that Samsung has decided to keep SmartTag compatibility limited to Galaxy devices. It means if you have an iPhone or any other Android phone for that matter, the tracker tool will not work for you.

There is another variant called Galaxy SmartTag+ which makes use of the Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology. It works exactly like the standard version but is able to track a more precise location of items, thanks to UWB. If you want to grab the Plus variant, you will have to wait as Samsung says it will arrive "later this year".

The Galaxy SmartTag is priced at $29.99 for a single unit but is also available in packs of two and four for $49.99 and $84.99 respectively. It will go on sale starting January 29th but if you are going to pre-order a Galaxy S21, you will get one unit free. On another hand, the Galaxy SmartTag+ will cost $39.99 for the single pack and $64.99 for the pack of two.
