Facebook is an internet company but in the last few years, it has ventured into the hardware business. Two of its popular products include Oculus virtual reality headsets and Portal-branded smart display devices. It is now reported to be secretly working on a smartwatch that will expand its hardware portfolio.
The report is coming from The Information citing an anonymous source familiar with internal matters. The Facebook smartwatch will be running the Android operating system but it is not confirmed to be Google's Wear OS. It is claimed that the team is also working on its version of Android for future hardware products. The custom OS is expected to debut on the second-gen smartwatch sometime around 2023.
In terms of features, the Facebook smartwatch is expected to be focused on health and fitness along with messaging features. It will let users There is tipped to be tight integration with Facebook apps and services including Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The smartwatch will have cellular connectivity so that users do not have to carry their smartphones everywhere.
There is no doubt that the idea of a smartwatch is beneficial from Facebook's perspective but we will have to wait if users will be excited about the release. Facebook's track record with user data handling and privacy protection has not exactly been convincing which could make a lot of uses skeptical.
