Meta to release four VR headsets by 2024; Project Cambria launch this year

03 May 2022 0

Meta reportedly has plans to release at least four different VR headsets by 2024. It is reported by The Information citing an internal roadmap leak obtained by the publication. It reveals that Meta is set to be quite aggressive when it comes to releasing new VR products. This is not surprising considering Mark Zuckerberg's commitment to the metaverse.

The report claims that two of the VR headsets will be lower-end Quest models. The other two will be pro models and are described as "laptop for the face". This suggests that these two will be quite powerful in terms of performance and processing. The first VR headset among these four will go official in September this year. This is the same headset that we have previously heard rumors of as Project Cambria.

This particular VR headset is tipped to cost about $799 which puts it in the premium segment. If we talk about Quest VR headsets that are sold currently, these are available for about $399. There is a clear gap of almost 100% between the two headsets. The expensive model is said to bring display with such a high-resolution image quality that users can use it to send emails and even code in a virtual environment.

The processing power of the device is said to be equivalent to that of a low-end laptop. It is compared to having a Chromebook for the face. It will reportedly boot Meta's Android OS version and will support a bunch of different apps and games. The company then has an improved version of this VR headset under development. It is codenamed Funston and is expected to debut sometime in 2024. There are two more models codenamed Stinson and Cardiff with an expected release during 2023 and 2024 respectively.
