Apple is long rumored to have plans for three smartwatch launches for 2022. These will include the usual Apple Watch and Apple Watch SE upgrades but there will be a new rugged version as well. Mark Gurman of Bloomberg has now shared a new report detailing what changes to expect from this new variant that Apple will debut for the first time.
Gurman says that the rugged Apple Watch variant will be aimed at "extreme sports athletes". It will have the biggest display panel available on any Apple Watch yet. It is said to measure about 2-inches diagonally which is slightly bigger than the 1.9-inch display of the Apple Watch Series 7. This increase in size will be exclusive to the rugged model. The standard Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch SE successor are said to continue with current sizes.
The panel will have a 410 x 502 pixels resolution and an unchanged overall sharpness. It will also be shatter-resistant as the smartwatch is supposed to be rugged. Apple will replace the use of aluminum with a strong metal material for enhanced durability. It will also have a larger battery so that athletes can track their workouts for a longer period of time without worrying about running out of juice.
The rugged watch will have the ability to check for fever similar to the Apple Watch Series 8. All three smartwatch models will be powered by the S8 processor. It is said to have the same level of performance as the S7 which itself was quite similar to the S6. Apple is further said to make tracking metrics improvements for more accurate results. There are no words on when we will see Apple Watch launch but it should happen sometime during September 2022.
